We can characterize our new compounds in the solution, solid and gas phases. FKF is well equipped for this and we supplement with national and international collaborations in Raman and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Catalytically competent intermediates are particularly challenging because they are highly reactive, perhaps existing only for a few seconds in the solution state, even at temperatures below 0°C.
Specialist equipment in our labs:
- UV-vis: Agilent 8453 spectrophotometer with an UNISOKU CoolSpek UV USP-203 temperature controller
- EPR spectra: (X-band) Bruker EMX Plus CW spectrometer
- Vibrational Circular Dichroism: Biotools Chiral IR2X spectrometer
- Inert atmosphere glove box: Bruun Unilab
- X-ray: Rigaku Oxford Synergy Dualflex diffractometer (see Crystallography page)
- Electrochemistry (Cyclic voltammetry): Eco Chemie Autolab PGSTAT10
- Gas chromatography: Hewlett Packard 6890 Series system with a FID detector, Bruker 450-GC with TCD and FID detectors for volatile compounds
FKF houses other infrastructure that we use regularly, including NMR, IR, CD, Fluorescence and Mass spectrometers, TGA, and powder X-ray diffraction.
